Re: Bump Keys - Anybody Can Enter Your Home

Andy: This is actually a big law enforcement problem now because these bump keys leave no evidence that your door was opened. Insurance companies are not paying on Home Owner policies after somebody cleaned-out your home.

Do a Google search on "bump key" and see how big this problem is now. YouTube is being forced to yank all the how-to videos under pressure from the FBI. There is even a BumpKey Forum on the internet that sells these keys and explains how to use them.

Watch the Google Video...every door lock can be opened in 10 seconds...including your's.

:bandit: easy peasy

Normal locks are nothing for a bump-picker. Those tacticool "lockpick guns" you see on TV are only $50. A real locksmith-quality is $200 + extra bumps IIRC.

If you want that door to stay shut, put a real deadbolt (no outside access) on it, possibly a NY lock, and give it some steel. You can't really protect your house while you're out unless you buy an expensive doorset.

I set doors once that got "real" doorsets... we had to hang them in steel and the locksmith specified a certain Kwickset lockset we were to use. He stopped by at about 3pm one day. The next morning everything but the knob to the front door had different locks. The knob was the construction access all of us had the key for. The new locks didn't look like Kwickset. They looked real, as in commercial/protection quality. One trip back by the locksmith and no construction scumbag has access to these ultra-cool locks. Everyone was talking about them that morning, "Wow, hardcore locks!"

Of course, that house also had a space in the basement we were not supposed to finish... at all. It was about 6ft x 8ft and out of the way behind the wine cellar, sauna and walk-in humidor. So... you know.

McSecurity in a McMansion.

Those locks impressed the hell out of me though... deadbolt went 2.5in in and was 1.25in thick... not messing around.

Watch this guy bump open three Master Lock padlocks in this one-minute Google Video:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...bump+key&hl=en

WTSHTF and these guys arrive at your Survival Retreat don't think that a chain/padlock across your driveway will stop anybody. Some guy with a $2 Masterlock bumpkey in his Bugout Bag will be eating your Preps.

:bandit: this M1 bumpkey is included in all bumpkey sets sold on E-Bay.

The FBI forced YouTube to take down bump videos?

Can I get a source on that? It sounds fishy.

The MIT Lock Picking Guide has been up on the web for years.

My front door sucks, but I have no doubt some dirtbags in my hood have these keys. I'm getting a new lock. Not that a poor bastard like me has anything worth taking, but the little bit I got, I'm keeping.

And if certain videos were stolen and ended up on the web, it'd be mighty embarrasing...

QWAK,Locks are mostly to keep HONIST people HONIST, the SKUM BAGS need a greater incentive to GO AWAY and NOT take your stuff!

What I did was bought a couple CHEEP inactive "HAND GRENADES" they are DISPLAYED prominently at entrences with equaly OBVIOUS TRIP WIRES atached. For the TRUELY STUPID I added a SIGN with an arrow pointing to the GRENADE "IF you are thinking about ROBING this place ---- THINK AGEN!" :afraid:

Once the word gets around to all the SCUM BAGS they seem to come to the conclusion that it just aint worth the posability that the GRANADES just could be real and armed! :albertein

CHEEPER and more efective than a LOCK!:proud:

If they believe you are CRAZY and could be crazy enough, then they will not even try to call your BLUFF!:applause_ :clap2: :D

I've seen the video...and agree, if you depend on a door lock for security, they are pretty easily defeated.

We can all understand why Andy can only give this thread a :thumbs up one-thumbs up rating until his recent injury heals.

 just funnin ya too Andy

Actually this bumpkey threat is a serious topic. Bravado comments about guns are silly because we are not always at home. JoeJeweler recently posted a thread about being robbed when he was not home. Andy is soon traveling to the GIM Summit out of town. Lets all stay on topic please. I think this threat is very serious and I am just trying to warn all GIMers of this vulnerability. Some of us have wives and children behind these easy-to-bump locks.

I NEVER was robed when I lived in Chicago but befor I got moved in to my cabin in the woods a local who was working on the property next to mine (who I tried to make friends with) hit my place after I had left to pick up another load. He got about $4000.00 in tools and GUNS! (I found out some time later who did it)

I don't want to hurt any one BUT I also don't want any one hurting ME.:albertein

I figure leting them believe I am a CRAZY NAM VET with BOOBY TRAPS is just the right ticket! I don't even bother to lock up any more inless I will be gone for a long time!

Don't get many visitors but then when I did they never offered to HELP any way!:haha: :haha: :haha:

Re: Bump Keys - Anybody Can Enter Your Home

A few points;

A bump key would be used when discretion is important because a hammer would work just as well if they're not worried about noise.

In a remote location a log would do just as well.

A burglar using a bump key has to have it on him, which can be incriminating.
A burglar sophisticated enough to use them also is smart enough not to want to be caught with them.

Always lock your doors and gates. It's a prosecution thing. I'd hate to try to prosecute a burglar who entered thru an open gate and an unlocked door.

Edit: never mind prosecution if burial is the objective.

Re: Bump Keys - Anybody Can Enter Your Home

QWAK,There are other simple and relitively harmless devices that could also be helpfull.

One is a "FLASH TRAP", it is an atractive box that looks like it could hold somthing of high value. What it amounts to is either a small STROBE from a disposable camera or some old FLASH CUBES wired together to a battery with a TRIP SWITCH. If the scum bag opens the box (especialy at night) the FLASH will temporarely BLIND him and posably scare him enough to SHIT his pants!:aetsch:  :censored:

With a little creativity one can also take a CHEEP STUN GUN (you can buy them for $20.00 on line thease days) and rig it so a door knob or drawr knob so it is ELECTRIFIED when opened. For added effect a "DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE" sign prominently displayed will get their mind set up so IF/WHEN they get ZAPED they will not be inclined to do any further searching and promptly EXIT your abode! :afraid:

NOTE: Both of thease are harmless BUT you may have a MESS to clean up when you return home!:albertein :haha: :haha: :haha:

IF you use your mind and think ahead more often then NOT you can OUT SMART thievs and SCUM BAGS after all they are seldom the BRIGHTIST BULB in the box or they would NOT be doing what they are doing!:D

Sure....no problem.

I was always of the opinion that conversations went where they went, and unless it degraded into flesh eating homophobia that had NOTHING to do with the topic, it was cool.

but it's your thread.

Picking locks isn't rocket science, but most theives and methheads aren't going to take the time to learn the craft. If these people were that motivated they'd most likely have real jobs. If they're interested in getting in and they think they can get away with it they'll just bust a window. All this lockpicking stuff, though fun to learn and impress friends with, doesn't get used much in the real world by the dregs of society. The only folks who are going to pick your locks are employed by the government in which case your already screwed.

maybe they should just continue it here. no one 'owns' a thread. the beauty of conversation is often in the divergences.

A Great Pyrenees and two Great Danes keep out the honest people! The dogs "collect" coyotes on their off-duty hours. Eleven in the last 5 weeks. No vet bills because they don't screw around. No shredded ears or bite marks that I've ever seen.

Someone gets past the front door with those three protecting the place is easy proof that they are bad-guys and then the ass wipes lose big-time.

If there is anything left that is identifiable.
